LASER CUTTING
A)START-UP
turn on the air compressor at the back of the red switch
turn on the switch of flip extractor
turn on the switch of laser cutter, then wait until it completes initialization
proceed to work station where we start setting our drawing to the laser cutter machine.
B)Operation of laser cutter including the basic use of Corel-Draw
Open the cover fully to put your board into the machine.
Close up the cover, make sure there are 2 green lights to confirm that the cover is closed properly.
Import your DXF or SVG file into CORELDRAW OR design in the webpage.
Set the line weight, colour and fill. Make sure all are the right colours for cutting, engraving and scoring.The red colour means cutting but the green colour means engraving.When we need to put some colour ,we need to adjust the value of the colour.For example, we will colour the shape that we wanna to cut with red colour and adjust its colour with 255 value but for other colour is zero.It is same to engraving by using green colour.
Once done, go to File and Print button, and press PRINT.
Change the auto focus to thickness.
Adjust the settings such as frequency,power ,thickness and turn on the air assist
- wait for the laser cutter to work.
After the machine is done printing, let the board rest for a minute to cool down.
Open the cover fully and take out your board.
C)Shut-down
turn off the switch of laser cutter.
turn off the switch of flip extractor.
turn off the air compressor.
In this laser cutting practical, the teacher teaches us how to use the CORELDRAW software and how to adjust the setting for cutting such as adjusting power, frequency, thickness and so on. The teacher also talks about the start-up and shut down procedure. After we practiced for some time using this software, we began to examine start-up, operating and using CORELDRAW software, and shut down procedures. For the CORELDRAW test, everyone may be asked for a different shape in a group.
This practical is essential to us because we can master the laser cutting skill and we can design a model first before we implement it into reality. We also can know our mistakes first and what is out of our consideration so we can do some correction for it and make the product be much more perfect. In the practical, our product was not successful as our product’s slot could not fit as we did not consider about kerf that could happen. However, this is one experience and a good lesson for us so we can do better next time. This laser cutting skill is related to the fusion 360 skill. This is because we can export our sketch in fusion 360 into CORELDRAW software because it will be easier as compared to drawing in CORELDRAW software. Fusion 360 software is also easier and good in some aspects such as 3D design like thickness and adjusting each parameter with the help of parametric design.
Before this practical, I used to think that operation for laser cutter machines was difficult. However, now I think that it is very useful because using a laser cutter machine requires us to consider many aspects before starting on the laser cutting like to consider about kerf, and so on. So next time I will focus on sketching first before kerfing by adjusting the design in Fusion 360 perfectly. Therefore, I can use this new skill to kerf the cartoon model I like such as doraemon, ultraman and so on.
